Are
Goldendoodles Crazy?
Goldendoodles are the result of a cross between a Golden Retriever
and a Poodle. It is considered one of the most popular “designer dogs” in the
world.
An idea that Australian Wally Conron put into practice after a
woman asked him for an animal that combines the dexterity of a golden with the
curls of a poodle; he wanted the perfect guide dog while also achieving a
particular aesthetic touch.
About Goldendoodles
If you love the gentle character of the Golden Retriever but also
prefer a pet that doesn’t shed its hair, then this breed is your idyllic
companion. Because of this reason, it is suitable for all those who have
allergies.
They are usually chosen as companion dogs in houses where there
are children, since they are very affectionate and friendly, although they are
also suitable to help people who are suffering from some type of visual
impairment. They are also very intelligent. They learn orders with little
effort.
They come in different sizes: minis, medium, and large. This
variable will largely depend on the weight of their parents, although we should
not be guided exclusively and solely by it. If you want to know the main characteristics
of the Goldendoodle, be sure to read this article.
The character and behavior of the Goldendoodle
This breed of dog is especially affectionate, sweet, and sociable.
They love to be around people and also other animals, which is why they are not
exactly good watchdogs: they will make friends with thieves rather than drive
them away.
They tend to present behavioral problems if their owners leave
them alone for a long time. They are also faithful, loyal, and obedient, which
makes them easy dogs to train if they receive good training.
Goldendoodles tend to gnaw everything they find on their way, so
it will be necessary to train them correctly to remove this mania. They also
have a great sense of smell, so we can play with them to hide certain objects so
that they can find them.
Their
craziness:
Most of the Goldendoodles are more than a little energetic. You
can expect boundless curiosity, exciting behavior, plenty of licking, and
zoomies. It is not as the larger-sized dogs are more likely to be crazy but,
because their power and antics are more destructive due to their size.
They are dogs that have a lot of energy, so we must give them long
walks or even go for a run with them. Some Goldendoodles love to swim. This
ability can only be developed with good training.
What are the physical characteristics of a
Goldendoodle
We can find Goldendoodles of different colors: black, beige, and
chocolate, although the most common is cream and gold. His hair is long, thick,
and curly – therefore we must brush it constantly, in that way we will prevent
it from getting tangled and knots from forming.
As mentioned above, their size can vary: the largest weigh between
20 and 30 kilos, the medium ones weigh between 14 and 20 kilos, and the minis
can weigh up to 6 kilos. Females are usually two inches smaller than males.
Necessary care for a Goldendoodle
Their life expectancy is around 15 years and during all that time
they are usually in good health, although we must be especially vigilant when
our dog reaches an advanced age, as it can suffer from hip dysplasia.
You also have to be careful with your eyes and ears. Goldendoodles
are prone to diseases in these areas, so it is essential to keep them very
clean to avoid any type of infection.
Adult Goldendoodles have to eat a couple of times a day, once in
the morning and once at night. Their food should be high in protein, in this
way we make sure they get all the energy they need, and they should also rest
after meals to avoid a stomach twist.
Our dog must eat special food for puppies until the first year of
age, from there we can introduce adult food. Obviously, we will have to have a
container full of water to avoid dehydration, especially during the summer.
How to train a Goldendoodle
Although he is a very intelligent dog, and therefore easy to
train, we must be patient and reward him every time he correctly performs the
order we have given him. We can reward him with special treats for dogs, in
this way he will associate both.
It is better to stimulate your dog through treats than to punish
him when he does not obey an order. Although this last method seems effective,
the only thing we will achieve is that our furry companion is afraid of us.
In addition, physical punishment can cause the dog to suffer from
anxiety episodes by suppressing his anger, which could lead to aggressive
behavior in the future.
Consistency is the key to any training. Do not throw in the towel
if your dog does not pay attention to you during the first days, some find it
more difficult than others. But if you are persistent and insist you will
surely get good results.
Know the
origins of this breed:
Its origins date back to 1989, at which time the Golden Retriever
and Poodle breeds were crossed with the aim of obtaining guide dogs capable of
helping blind people.
Three puppies were born from that experiment. Of these, one went
to the woman and the other two stayed with Conron until he had another idea: to
leave behind the name of “cross” to “new type of non-allergenic dog”, which
would receive the name of “labradoodle.”
“Can you call the media and tell them that we have bred a special
breed,” Conrad revealed to ABC television. It was 1989, the rest came rolled.
The “Goldendoodle” or “Labradoodle” was not long in arousing
significant interest among designer dogs, which began to fetch much higher
prices than other breeds. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus or Barack Obama boasted
of having one.
Little by little, new “breeds” appeared in the style of the
“labradoodle” such as the “Schnoodles”, the result of a cross between a poodle
and a schnauzer.
This beautiful little dog was conceived in the United States and
Australia. The sociable character of this friendly animal made it later become
the ideal companion for young and old.
